Good times in the vines
Flophouse is delighted to now be hosting accommodation at Zig Zag Winery. Accommodation includes a four-bedroom mud-brick house and a one-bedroom train carriage that can be enjoyed together or separately. Picture yourself in a French New Wave movie, enjoying an alfresco lunch looking over the vines or curl up with a fire and a good book in winter. The architect-designed mud brick family home is suitable for friends or families with plenty of room to unwind and a separate “parent’s retreat”.
The additional one-bedroom caboose with an ensuite bathroom can be booked together to accommodate larger groups or separately as a romantic sojourn for couples or perhaps a Flophouse for a writer, inspired by the sensational views. Guests are all treated to hotel style amenities, including luxury linens, bathrobes and Aspar Body products (also used in the Qantas Club) and the Flophouse team deliver a breakfast hamper of locally sourced produce.
All guests receive a complimentary bottle of Zig Zag Wine and a free cellar door tasting. The cellar door is open Friday to Monday 12 - 5 pm

Harriet and Henry Churchill, owners of Zig Zag Rd. Winery and the team at Flophouse are thrilled to offer an accommodation experience at their sublime vineyard. Guests can now book the entire property, including the Big Vine House, the owner’s light-filled, architect-designed, mudbrick family home or Little VineCaboose, a restored vintage train carriage. Alternatively, Big and Little can be booked separately if you want a smaller group stay or a couples/solo retreat. Either way you will be rewarded with a unique stay, enjoying panoramic views over the vineyard and the chance to truly unwind, just over an hour away from the big smoke.
Located 10 kms from Kyneton, outside the quaint village of Malmsbury in the Macedon Ranges on Dja Dja Wurrung Country, Big Vine House and Little Vine House is situated on a 50-year old heritage vineyard where the Henry and Harriet grow our grapes and make award-winning small batch wine, under the Zig Zag Rd. label. They have also recently taken up a new challenge, the French Project, a sister winery in the Languedoc- Roussillon region of southern France. In the meantime their local team will continue to make wine and manage the cellar door and Flophouse Accommodation will host your stay at the vineyard. All guests receive a complimentary bottle of Zig Zag Rd. wine, a complimentary wine tasting and the opportunity to tour the vineyard on request. In house grazing can be arranged via Daylesford Gourmet.
The layout
Big and Little are separated by approximately 40 metres of landscaped gardens and there are two expansive decks to soak up the sweeping views of the small regenerative vineyards and the solid stretch of Belltopper forest behind.
On arrival
What can you expect when you arrive? We will welcome you with a small welcome pack to tie you over and a complimentary bottle of wine from our cellar door (together valued at around $60) so you can cosy up and enjoy all that the picturesque Macedon Ranges has to offer. If you wish to pop over and experience a wine tasting, the cellar door is open Friday to Monday 12 - 5pm. Tastings for guests are complimentary. If you'd like a picnic to accompany your tasting, please contact our partner, Daylesford Gourmet and they will deliver during your stay.
Access
As grapes are grown and wine is made on the property, you might see a member of our team near the cellar door or in the vines working their magic. As a working winery there is machinery, sheds and barrels etc about that are out of bounds and hazardous. I. We kindly ask guests not to enterthe vines without our permission due to disease risk to the vines. But visitors are otherwise welcome to meander the property (around 20 acres) or we can give you some tips to do things locally. And just a reminder that we are a working winery and farm so there is machinery, sheds and barrels etc that are all out of bounds and we just ask that all gates are closed behind visitors to keep livestock in.
Drummond is part of the Hepburn Shire. The Dja Dja Wurrung are the traditional owners of the region. We respect and acknowledge the vital role of the traditional custodians of the land on which Zig Zag is located. This region is widely known for its spa culture and tourism.

“We have loved living here and are very sad to be leaving for a few years whilst we set up a sister vineyard in France. Apart from the gorgeous panoramic views of our vineyard and the Belltopper forest behind, we adore nature and love the riot of noise you get here only from frogs and birds and other wildlife. Otherwise, it's quiet and deliciously dark at night. We recommend leaving the blinds up to get your proper nature hit!”, Harriet and Henry, December 2023
“This was our third stay at the caboose and it certainly continues to delight. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t playing nice but the lovely bottle of red provided and the cosy fire made for a very comfy stay. Harriet and Henry are amazing hosts and always think of the little details to make everything perfect. Thanks Sarah for the cheeky red at the cellar door”, Kim Oct 23

From $490 per night + Cleaning
The main limewashed, mudbrick house has cathedral ceilings and huge double-glazed windows looks over the Belltopper forest and vineyard. It's a wonderfully inviting space, with open fire, and tastefully furnished with vintage furniture, rugs, books and art work. The owners have generously left their favourite things for you to enjoy. It an ideal place for a friends reunion or family vacation. The house sleeps eight adults in a configuration of one king bed; one king split bed and two queen beds.
The kitchen is fully equipped (having been home to the owners for many years) and there is pretty much everything you need to cook a feast, including oven, 4 hob stove, baking bits and bobs and even rice cookers, a microwave, and a slow cooker if you want to slow cook up your winter specialties. Guests are welcome to help themselves to supplies in the pantry and Flophouse supply the basics for cooking, including olive oil, salt, pepper and sugar. Please call ahead if there is a specific utensil or ingredient that you require. Just outside the kitchen, there is a dining table that seats 8 and is situated in the open plan living and dining area.
Upstairs, the master bedroom has a new king size bed (made up with gorgeous linen and a supremely comfy Peace Lily mattress), along with a parents retreat and a small en-suite bathroom. From the “parents wing”, there are stunning views over the property and living space to read and unwind. There is a single bed fold out sofa bed for additional sleeping.
There is a children’s play room located in an annexe at the top of the stairs with a daybed and a second bedroom with king bed that csn be split into two singles if required. The second bedroom enjoys views over the countryside.
The third and fourth bedrooms are off the main living area downstairs and have queen beds, luxury linens and are furnished in a French country cottage style.
There is another shared bathroom downstairs with a separate shower and a deep bath/shower that you can luxuriate in, soaking up the private garden view from the long window that's positioned next to the bath. Flophouse supply re-fillable Aspar Body products for guests to use during their stay.
Each adult guest is supplied a linen bathrobe, and of course all other linen and a full set of towels are provided. Re-fillable Aspar Body products (also used in the Qantas Club) are complimentary for guests to use during your stay. Bring your slippers to go with your bathrobe, as the mornings up in the Macedon Ranges can be chilly even in summer, but there is of course heating and cooling (a fire place and split system) and the house once warmed up is very cosy. Slippers just top off the experience!
There is a washing machine, hills hoist and dryer that you are welcome to use and is useful for longer stays.
There are two stunning decks and a wrap-around verandah with outdoor furniture to enjoy the various views with some wine or your coffee and massive glass sliding doors on two sides of the house that let the light pour in. From the owners:
“We adore nature and love the riot of noise you get here only from frogs and birds and other wildlife. Otherwise, it's quiet and deliciously dark at night. We recommend leaving the blinds up to get your proper nature hit!”

Little Vine Caboose.
1 bedroom - Sleeps 2
From $250 per night + Cleaning
Snug up in a beautifully converted train caboose overlooking the Zig Zag Winery vineyard and the undulating ‘Belltoper' forest beyond, located outside the lovely village of Malmsbury in the Macedon Ranges on Dja Dja Wurrung Country.
Originally a 1950’s Melbourne ‘red rattler’ guardsman’s carriage, this self-contained, renovated caboose sleeps up to two people and is the perfect escape for a romantic sojourn, nature hit, or solo writer’s retreat. Whatever your reason for visiting, the carriage offers magical views and the opportunity to savour a regenerative, working vineyard and winery whilst you and restore and reset.
Flophouse can help you tailor your own DIY retreat whether it be writing, wine tasting or staying in with local catering. All guests are welcomed with a complimentary bottle of Zig Zag wine from the cellar door and complimentary breakfast provisions, so you can cosy up and enjoy all that this picturesque vineyard in the Macedon Ranges has to offer.
Rest assured in the caboose with a fully equipped kitchenette, an ensuite bathroom with a shower, and a deluxe queen bed with SA Minijumbuk wool doonas and beautiful linen sheets. We encourage you to bring your own slippers so that you can enjoy a morning coffee on the undercover deck.
With panoramic views outside and a cosy interior, Little Vine is the perfect place to experience JOMO and journaling. Wi-fi is still a work in progress due to the thickness of the train's steel walls!) There's generally good phone service though, particularly for Telstra.
We are a 5-minute drive from the quaint village of Malmsbury (where there's a bakery, a general store and a few lovely little shops), and only 15 minutes from Kyneton. Or head to Daylesford or Trentham or a host of other incredible places to explore in the other direction.
