The Goldfields Track Walk Series - Part Six (19km)
Walk - Dry Diggings Track (Vaughan Springs to Castlemaine)
Length - 19.5km
Time to complete: approx. 6-7hrs
Last Tuesday we went on our longest ever walk along the Goldfields Track from Vaughan Springs to Castlemaine. Luckily we picked a perfect day. Starting at Vaughan Springs we followed a "goat track" through the hills then travelled through some old diggings hidden in bushland then on to Irish Town and through some beautiful pastoral country before arriving in Fryerstown where we stopped for lunch after a two hour walk. After refuelling at the picnic grounds we walked for another hour and a half towards Spring Gully and the site of a former battery mine established in the 1900's, Now appearing like a series of stone walled ruins in the middle of the bush, this was another perfect place to stop and savour the scenery and imagine life in other times. After Spring Gully it was another 2 - 3 hour walk to Castlemaine. Luckily our friends scooped us up at Chewton and took us back to our car in Vaughan Springs.
