Tom's Cottage invites you to imagine a flamboyant boot-maker, who liked to attend local dances and enjoy the finer things of life. Now his former cottage is available to guests that seek the same. With a mix of new and antique furnishings, art, quality bed linen and a collection of vintage objects you will be transported to another time and place. Choose between luxuriating in the king bed upstairs or perhaps enjoying a downstairs living space with garden views and a wood fire. A fully equipped kitchen if you decide to stay in or why not follow Tom’s lead and strut down Piper Street to one of Kyneton's renowned eateries?

Dating to the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, Tom’s Cottage has been lovingly reinvented using hempcrete and traditional lime plaster to create unique and characterful lodgings. Venetian plastered walls complement vintage furniture and artworks, and natural linens sit alongside recycled tartan and tweed textiles in a beautiful blend of heritage and modern finishes.

Nestled amongst some of Victoria’s finest Classical Victorian architecture, Tom’s Cottage c.1854 is one of Piper Street’s earliest buildings. The cottage has been home to a baker, a cooper and a member of Victoria’s first parliament, and more recently, to a much loved local boot repairer, Tom Hickey. Tom’s boot repairs and men’s shoe store on High Street, Kyneton was, from the 1930s to the 1980s, a cherished spot for locals to catch up on the latest gossip. Discovered beneath the floors during cottage renovations were many of Tom’s unwanted tools of the trade. Today, guests will discover these little treasures of the past throughout the cottage.

From 1851, Kyneton was part of the goldfields explosion and became a service town for the region and has long been known for its hospitality. In recent years it has also become known for fine dining and artisan shopping. If you feel like adventuring beyond Kyneton, there are many walks to explore, wineries and European gardens. We respect and acknowledge the vital role of the Taungurung people, who are local custodians of the area where Tom's Cottage is located. Tom’s Cottage is within walking distance of some of Regional Victoria’s finest dining and cafe venues, boutiques and galleries. The seasonal beauty of the Campaspe River Walk is only minutes away.

Kyneton is part of Mount Macedon Shire, and includes the lands of the Taungurung nation. As the traditional owners of the region, we respect and acknowledge the vital role of the local custodians of the region where Bird House is located. Kyneton was part of the goldfields explosion from 1851. Later, it became a service town for the region and has long been known for its hospitality to travellers.

We had an amazing weekend at Tom's Cottage. Very cozy and beautifully decorated/furnished. The decor and furniture bring out the ambience of the history of the cottage. Especially love the amount of sunlight that fills the living space and bedroom in the late mornings and afternoons. The cleanliness was impeccable, the shower was very well maintained with no mold and the exhaust system runs so well that the mirror does not fog up at all. The welcome hamper was so tastefully put together. Genevieve was very accommodating and lovely. The location is perfect, just walking distance from all the good eats. We would highly recommend Tom's Cottage, and would definitely plan to come back the next time we're staying in Kyneton, Dion, August, 2023
