The Goldfields Track Walk Series - Part Three (14km)
Walk - Faraday to Sutton Grange over Mount Alexander
Length - 14km
Time to complete: approx. 3.5hrs
A few weeks ago we met up with some friends who share our love of hiking and picnics to complete this section of the Goldfields Track. Along the way we picked up some excellent baguettes and pastries from the Johnny Baker drive through bakery in Castlemaine and made sure our thermoses and water bottles were filled as we have run out before on our Goldfields Track adventures. From just past the Granite Quarry on McQuillans Road, Faraday we crossed over a Farmer's style to climb a steep granite hillside before making it to the top of Mount Alexander, enjoying spectacular views along the way at Ed's Seat and Dog's Rock. After passing Dog's Rocks the scenery changed dramatically and became much more lush (see picture) before opening up again to large, flat granite boulders that made perfect picnic spots. Note there are quite a few vehicle entry points on the top of Mount Alexander and one is quite close to Dog Rocks if you don't want to do the entire walk. The walk ends at Faraday-Sutton Grange Road, Sutton Grange.
